“Write what needs to be written.” “Evil will prevail when good people do nothing.”, said Erin Gruwell passionately. As Erin Gruwell walks onto the stage she smiles warmly and begins to tell her story to the students of Vista Del Lago High School.

Vista Del Lago welcomes Erin Gruwell and her freedom writers with open arms and is excited for her former students and herself to tell their story and inspire many students.

“Erin Gruwell has started the Freedom Writers Institute to teach the idea of teaching through love. Moreno Valley Unified School district has sent educators from other districts because of the partnership, they also have them come for 9th and 10th graders. Honestly what the freedom writers are really good at is planting the seed of hope. This promotes the belief in students that they can succeed and as you can’t tell teaching is my passion it’s my person. It fulfills me in all things and Erin Gruwell is the reason why I can say I’m not weird for loving this as much as I do.”, said Dana Dunams, Administrator at Vista Del Lago High School.

The many teachers that were trained and learned from Erin Gruwell were soon impacted and inspired. Through her they began learning how to listen to students and help them.

Johnny Munoz, the ASB Instructor said, “There are several teachers that have been trained in The Freedom Writers’ Methods, we were changed instantly and wanted to try their methods right away so we can see why students behave the way they do.”

Erin Gruwell not only impacted all teachers and students but also was impacted by her students, the freedom writers. She was drawn to the broken and resentful students and wanted to know their stories.

“All kids have the ability to be successful. I was told that my students were stupid, would never amount to anything and would never make it through high school so I wanted to prove them wrong. Through the 4 years I was with them I saw what an impact I made on them. I felt humbled, it was very overwhelming because it was sort of like seeing your sons and daughters succeed and that was really amazing.”, said Erin Gruwell

Ms.Gruwell is known for her unique teaching methods and is still inspiring and impacting many more teachers and students to this day and plans to continue making a difference.
